Tips for a Successful EdCamp Experience -- Tip #3
Use social media to share, share, share! We anticipate a lot of amazing conversations about teaching and learning at EdCamp Chicago, and there is just no way we can all go to each session. Be sure to use the hashtag #edcampchicago when you share ideas on twitter. Add things to our Google doc so that everyone can see the awesome conversations we are having. If you have a blog, please post about your experience after the fact. We want to hear about what you learned!
Speaking of sharing with social media, we would like to introduce Shawn McCusker, World History and Social Studies Teacher at William Fremd High School in Palatine, IL. Shawn currently teaches in a 1:1 pilot and is in his 18th year of teaching. He began his career teaching junior high at St. Raymond de Penafort School in Mt. Prospect. He taught for a decade in U-46 at both Bartlett and South Elgin High Schools. In 2007 he moved to District 211 to teach at Fremd, his former high school. He has also taught evening alternate high school for 12 years.
We are so happy to have Shawn on our team of organizers because he has been to lots of Edcamps before! He loves \ that there is no plan for the day of an Edcamp until that morning. Teachers create the sessions based upon their needs. The Edcamp model puts teachers in charge of their own professional development. He always learns something about 1:1 workflow or creation tools and loves that there are always several really innovative topics. Shawn feels strongly about getting past discussions over PC or Mac, iOS or Android and start teaching the skills that make technology rather than a platform. He sees so many arguments about platform when in reality the goal is to help teach students how to find, process and manage information. He says the reality of devices is that it WILL change. The iPad is only 3 years old. The next game changer device is coming soon. We need to teach skills that will transfer when that change occurs.

When we asked him what device he couldn't live without, he said, "My smartphone. Game changer. Started me on twitter, connected me with my PLN." He also explained that his favorite social media platform is Twitter but in the classroom he uses Todays Meet.
Of course, we also asked Shawn what kind of Starbucks drink he would be if he was one, and he responded, "Grande Mocha, with an extra shot. Because coffee is life."
Thanks for stopping to learn more about Shawn! Please check out the hashtag #edcampchicago before and during the event to see what to expect and what others are learning and to share your own ideas!
